New Braunfels Unicorn Band

Let me back up a little bit before I continue to stroll down my Longhorn Band memory lane. Before my time at the University of Texas, I was a lowly naive bandsmember of the New Braunfels High School Unicorn Band. New Braunfels is the only school in the world to have a Unicorn as a mascot. And it is a manly unicorn at that - not like the pleasant Unicorn you see in the Squatty Potty commercials. Our school was a member of the University Interscholastic League 4-A division with other schools in San Antonio. At the time, we were the largest 4-A band in the area – bigger than many of the 5-A bands in San Antonio. In my freshman (1986) and senior (band season 1989) years, we advanced all the way to the State Marching Band competition. In 1988, we made it to Region Band competition. Let’s not discuss the gross injustice done to us by the judges in the 1987 district competition.

So here we are, the three shows that still exist as of today. I’m sorry for the quality, but remember in the 1980’s - we didn’t have High Definition. We also had parents who were the camera people. None of these videos were from me or my family (we didn’t have a video camera until I was a junior in college) - they were grabbed off of Facebook or Youtube.

Here is a photo of all of the senior band geeks in 1990:

Reflections about my time in band

My freshman year sucked. There were some upperclassmen tuba players who did not like me and took way too much advantage in my naivete. I forgive them, but the mental scars do hurt. Most of my friends didn’t start band until I was a Junior. I don’t know why, but I could relate to them a whole lot better than most of my class. I made All-District and All-Region in all years except for my freshman year (I didn’t try out. See upperclassmen note above). I bombed out when I had to go to the combined Region contest at McArthur every year while competing with the 5-A band members. I was first chair Region band for two years and second chair my first year. Not bad considering I learned how to play the tuba the summer before my 8th grade year. I still don’t know how to play everything properly - I can’t do pedal tones and my articulation is… crappy.. But hey, I had to teach myself and I’m good at faking it…

1986 Halftime Show at State Marching Band Competition. My favorite show.

1988 Haftime Show at Region Band Contest.

1989 Halftime Show at District Band Contest.
